The Brethren of the Coast History

Throughout history,especially during the "Golden Age of Piracy" which lasted through the early part of the 1700s, pirates have navigated the seas in search of treasures and riches. Many pirates in fact were "legal pirates" or, Privateers. Privateers would receive a "letter of marque" which entitled the owner of a private ship to outfit it for war and use it to attack enemy ships. In return for official permission the ship's owner split any booty captured with the royal treasury. Sir Francis Drake for example was a hated pirate to Spain, but a hero in England having looted over 300,000 lbs of booty during a single expedition.

Many if not most career pirates, whether Buccaneers from Hispaniola,Corsairs from Spain, Privateers from England or simply sailors who could not find an honest living became part of a fraternity of sorts started by Tortuga Buccaneers called "The Brethren Of The Coast" To become a member of this fraternity a member vowed to follow a strict code called the Custom of the Coast which was a set of guidelines covering things such as ship-board conduct, crew salaries and voting rights.
